The captivating new book, set in the lush mountains of Eastern Europe, is the first in a series that will delight parents and children alike.   
 
The golden, magical Kingdom of Bohemia -- once known for its sheer joy and shimmering jewels -- is thrown into chaos as the king's jealous brother wages war and people choose sides. Amidst the mayhem, the orphanage is bursting at the seams and about to close its doors, forcing the children to leave. Will things ever get better? Hope seems lost.
 
Enter Jordanka, the plucky young heroine of the story. The small blonde girl with pigtails is a Czech orphan who lost her parents in the war. She does not have much by the world's standards but what she does have is a brave heart, a creative mind, and a compassionate and fiercely determined spirit. And, perhaps most importantly, she has hope for a better day. Armed with these gifts, Jordanka sets out to save both the Bohemian royal family and the children at the orphanage from potential demise brought on by greed, bickering, and hopelessness.
 
"This book will spark children's imagination, challenge them to think about the plight of others, teach them the importance of kindness and determination, and educate them about the world in which they live," said Ms. Teske. "It's a book about hope and love, and I pray will impact lives for good."
 
The book combines a lively and exciting storyline with breathtaking 3-dimensional illustrations that are bright, textured, and intriguing. In Jordanka's world, fluffy feathers form the trains of royal ball gowns and buttons ensconced in fabric flowers decorate the branches of trees. The book truly takes on a magical appeal as its pages are turned.
 
A variety of seemingly unrelated experiences led to the birth of The Adventures of Jordanka. Ms. Teske's past work with abused children gave her a strong desire to help the world's youngest and often-forgotten treasures. Her love of fashion and jewelry (and her frustration at not being able to afford an expensive Russian chandelier necklace she found in a pawn shop) led her to start making her own baubles, using Bohemian chandelier crystals. Eventually these interests combined, and the result was Jordanka Inc., a custom fashion design and publishing company aimed at helping children.
 
Proceeds from the book will go towards helping orphaned, abandoned, and institutionalized children living in the Czech Republic. Ms. Teske is packing up her belongings and relocating to Prague in late July 2009. She plans to partner with Czech-based NGOs who are currently assisting with these initiatives. Within the next two years, she hopes to open a privately run orphanage in the Czech Republic using sales from this book.
